Spring is a new beginning, and in ancent times New Year and Spring Equinox were identical.
Winter Solstice may be the time when light starts returning, yet also the time when winter starts and temperature drops.
But Spring means that heat also returns, and that makes nature wake up...
In ancient times the new year started when spring arrived. The light new year is a later invention.
And also slightly out of focus; we now have 3 holydays claiming to represent the same return of light:
Solstice (21 dec) and Christmess (24 dec) and New Year (31 dec). They all symbolize the same event.
